Fidelity Security Services & University of Pretoria join forces on a security training drive
Thursday, 1st July 2010

On the 17th May 2008, twenty (20) learners from the University of Pretoria (UP) security department, (amongst them, Mr. C. Fouche, the Director of Safety and Security) embarked on the NQF 3 Level National Certificate - General Security Practices, which is Qualification no: 22490.   During this time, fifteen (15) learners completed the qualification.

Shortly after completion of the qualification, the learners were exposed to an intensive RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) programme.  This was necessary to update their qualification in line with the revised General Security Practices NQF3 qualification no: 58577. This qualification became active at the time when they completed the first programme.

In 2008 the vision was put in full swing by the joint forces of UP and Fidelity Security Services (FSS). UP hand-picked candidates from their Safety and Security Division and FSS facilitated the course via their in-house training academy. The main rationale behind the training was to focus on specialisation within the industry and to empower individuals to be the best in their job-sphere.

The national certificate programme is fully accredited by SASSETA and it was certified on the 30th of March 2010.  A brief overview of the qualification includes the following:

The programme also consists of 124 credits divided in three components;

These include:
  • A Fundamental component with Numeracy & Literacy  that contain 36 credits in 8 compulsory unit standards.
  • A Core component  that is Security related consisting of  72 credits in 8 unit standards that is also compulsory.
  • Lastly an Elective component that is not particularly security related but that requires 16 credits that can be compiled from a selection of  16 elective unit standards.  The learners did however chose electives that are complimentary to their safety and security functions at the University.

These officers will further enhance their qualifications towards specialization in the industry, by entering the NQF 4 Qualification in specialist Security Practices.

"It is an honour to be part of such a significant springboard in the education of the Safety and Security Division at UP" says Mr. Wahl Bartmann, Fidelity Security Services Chief Executive Officer.

UP is the first private institution who consecutively completed both qualifications, FSS is proud to be part of such an prestigious accomplishment.

Tip of the Month

Beware of being followed from shopping centres. Suspects usually sit in parking areas of shopping centres and select people wearing expensive jewellery and driving expensive cars. They then follow them to the first place they stop at, which is usually in their driveways and rob them. If you notice that you are being followed drive straight to your nearest street patroller and start hooting.
